Up to $1,000 available to help a school program with transportation costs
OLYMPIA – Oct. 18, 2018 – The Deception Pass Park Foundation is offering a scholarship of up to $1,000 to one Washington State public, private or charter school. The scholarship will fund transportation to a science- or environmental-based field trip at Deception Pass State Park in 2019.
The purpose of the scholarship is to assist under-privileged or inner-city schools access one of the most iconic parks in Washington state. The award will offset transportation costs including bus drivers, mileage and/or gas and substitute teacher pay. Reimbursement will be remitted upon invoice.
Education professionals who are at least 18 years old and employed by an accredited K-12 public, private or charter school in Washington state that maintains a 501(c)(3) or 509(a)(1) tax-exempt status are eligible to apply.
Educators, teachers, principals, paraprofessionals or classified staff at these institutions must be willing to plan and execute a field trip that will provide a demonstrable learning experience for students. The ideal grades for this field trip are 3rd through 9th grades. However, all applications will be reviewed and considered. The ideal chaperone ratio is one adult for every six students (grades K through 6) and one adult chaperone for every 10 students (grades 7 through 12).
Deception Pass State Park rangers and interpretive staff will lead the field trip and provide the educational information. The recipient of the scholarship will work closely with Deception Pass State Park to ensure the needs of the field trip are met.
The deadline for the scholarship application is Dec. 1. The field trip should occur between Feb. 16 and May 30, 2019. The selection process for the scholarship recipient will be finalized by Dec. 7, and the recipient will be notified prior to Dec.14.
How to apply
A teacher and/or school administrator must submit a letter detailing the need for the scholarship, the type of curriculum this field trip would support, the number of people the trip will serve and demonstrated support from the school administration. Applications can be submitted by mail or email.
