Third planning meeting is July 18, in Sultan

OLYMPIA – July 2, 2018 – Washington State Parks will update community members and interested park visitors on the next phase of recreation planning for Wallace Falls State Park at a public meeting in Sultan.

The public is invited to continue participating in this planning process by attending the final public meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, at the Sultan City Hall Community Room, 319 Main St., Sultan. (Driving directions)

In late 2017, State Parks launched the Wallace Falls State Park planning effort with an initial meeting on Nov. 15, and a second meeting on March 21. More information about the planning project is available on the park's webpage.

Wallace Falls State Park, near the towns of Index and Gold Bar, is a popular day-use and overnight destination with trail opportunities in the park and on adjacent lands. In this third meeting, State Parks staff will present preliminary recommendations intended to address issues raised by park stakeholders during the first two stages of planning. Concerns include trail connections with adjacent lands and parking.

Key issues
Over the years, the park’s popularity has grown, while the original parking facilities have not been expanded. This planning process is an opportunity to focus on creative parking solutions for this popular park.

In addition, the public lands adjacent to Wallace Falls State Park provide an exciting opportunity to identify future trail connections, with the goal of improved user experience for hikers, mountain bikers, equestrians and other non-motorized trail users.

Next steps
Following the July 18 meeting, the public may continue to provide written comment through Aug. 3. Parks planning staff will present its recommendations to the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission at its regularly scheduled meeting on Sept. 20, in Okanogan. [UPDATE 9/4/18: The Wallace Falls presentation had been postponed until further notice.]

Opportunities for public comment will be available at the meeting, and public comment also may be provided by contacting Randy Kline, Parks Planner, at (360) 902-8632, email, or by commenting online.

Classification and Management Plan (CAMP)
State Parks has completed more than 100 land-use plans for parks around the state through its Classification and Management Plan (CAMP) public process. The CAMP process addresses parking issues, day-use and camping opportunities, overall visitor experiences, natural resources, recreation areas, trails and other topics of interest to the community.
