The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission announces a public meeting to discuss a sewage treatment facility project at Dosewallips State Park on Hood Canal.
The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 8, at the Brinnon Community Center, 306144 U.S. Highway 101, Brinnon.
The purpose of the meeting is to provide information regarding the upcoming construction of a new sewage system for Dosewallips State Park. State Parks staff will be on hand at the meeting to present the construction plan and to share information about the elements of the project and its timelines. Construction is scheduled to begin in June and be completed by January. The park will remain open during construction.
The new sewage system at Dosewallips will replace the aging septic system at the park with an improved treatment process that decreases negative impacts to groundwater quality. The $3.2 million capital project includes a new membrane bioreactor sewage treatment facility at the Green Hill property site, with construction slated for June through January. Associated work on new pump stations and removal of the old septic system will begin in the park in September.
The new system will help support State Parks’ mission of natural resources stewardship and is also part of a comprehensive regional cleanup effort known as the Puget Sound Initiative.
Puget Sound and Hood Canal are ecosystems in trouble. When toxic pollutants from various sources get into the water, they settle to the bottom, working their way into the food chain and accumulating, ultimately threatening the entire ecosystem. To address the problem, Gov. Christine Gregoire and the Legislature launched the Puget Sound Initiative in 2005, to restore, protect and preserve Puget Sound by 2020. The comprehensive effort includes local, state, federal and tribal governments, as well as scientists, business, agriculture and the public.

Dosewallips State Park is a 425-acre camping park on Hood Canal. The park also has freshwater shoreline on both sides of the Dosewallips River. Dosewallips is popular for water recreation activities such as clamming, diving and boating.
