Closure affects motorized vehicle access only
OLYMPIA – Aug. 31, 2015 – The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission today announced that the boat ramp at Fort Worden State Park is closed until further notice to motorized vehicle launching.
Sand and driftwood build up on the ramp, requiring State Parks to regularly clear the debris. The closure is necessary while State Parks seeks to renew expired permits from regulatory agencies to continue maintaining the ramp. In addition, State Parks is exploring options for long-term, sustainable boat access at the park.
The closure affects motorized launching only, because of the possibility of cars and trucks getting stuck in the sand. Non-motorized launching is allowed.
Once permits are renewed, the timing of maintenance work will depend on specific conditions as determined by the permitting agencies. For example, the beach at Fort Worden is documented spawning habitat for forage fish, such as sand lance and surf smelt. During forage fish spawning seasons, maintenance activities may need to be curtailed.
At this time, State Parks cannot provide a date for when the ramp will re-open to motorized launching.
For alternative boat launches and ramps in the vicinity, State Parks recommends:
The public can find information about when the Fort Worden State Park boat ramp re-opens by checking the Fort Worden State Park web page at: www.parks.wa.gov/511/Fort-Worden.
